pls straighten me out on the terminology re: the bottom (normally) taskbar. the whole thing is called the "taskbar", the left is the "quicklaunch (bar)", the right is the "active tasks" bar (?), and the space over there by the clock is...um....????

in older windows i was used to QL being on the left but the apps themselves opening up with second icons over on the right; since w7 the QL icon itself lights up with the open app.

i say "usually" b/c i still have one or two apps which do it over on the right, old-school style. IE and FF, mainly -- the latter of which used to do it the w7/w8 way on the QL icon, but is suddenly doing it like IE.

not sure where the settings are for this, or how i managed to change the FF one lately.

worse yet, many apps ask me whether to "add to start menu", "add to desktop", "add to QL" when they install. i always click the latter 2 (never use start menu), but nothing ever adds to QL!! i have to go to the one on the desktop -- or other copy -- afterwards and manually click "pin to QL". wassupwiddat? why's it even bother asking, then, if QL can't handle it during app install?

minor stuff, i guess, but they've been bugging me ever since w7.

Over by the clock is the Notification Bar.

Apps that are in the Quick Launch Bar, will stay in that location when they are opened. Other items will open to the right of those.

I've never noticed items not installing to the quick launch area. Personally, I keep as little on the desktop as possible. Most everything is in the Start Menu with a select few items (that are used everyday) in the Quick Launch Bar.
