upgrade or replace?
Hi, I'm currently using a 2009 MacBook Pro, but I've heard that 10.11 is the last version of macOS to run on it... I guess what I was wondering is whether adding more memory to it would help, or if I'm better off just waiting for a newer model to be released? the computer runs so slowly that it can barely even open a window in the finder anymore... thanks!

If you know there's a specific part that's broken and is causing the problem, then it might be worth while buying a new part if you can fit it yourself. I don't know much about Macs, but laptops are never that friendly to amateur repairs and upgrades. My guess is it wont be much different for Macs. If you're thinking more memory or a more up to date hard drive then you're probably wasting your money. As a general rule, upgrading individual bits of hardware rarely - if ever - produces significant gains in performance. It is sort of similar to trying to boost the performance of a car. There's no point in just sticking massive carbs on your engine if you don't also fit a high performance cam shaft and exhaust system, and even if you do all three you'll still probably need to have the head ported a flowed as well. Big money. Better off getting a new machine I would think if you can't identify why your machine is so slow. |

On a 2009 Mac, i wouldn't install any OS software released after Snow Leopard.
I would copy all files to an external drive, and carry out a full wipe of everything and starting out from scratch (using Snow Leopard). A new machine is expensive, but maybe now is the time to begin saving towards one.

I would suggest upgrade your hard disk to an SSD. Upgraded a iMac 2011 from HDD to SSD; with El Capitan the boot time changed from almost two minutes to ten seconds. Due to the DVD unit being busted, I replaced it with an adapter so the SSD got added to the original storage as a second disk. Also, the darn beach ball while opening programs or having too much tabs while browsing all but dissapeared.
If you want to do the change yourself, look for your model of Mac in ifixit.com; they have very detailed guides and also sell the parts and tools needed. Hope this helps. |

Its not as easy as some past MacBooks to upgrade but its still pretty easy. Some have access to the hard drive under the battery. The biggest reason I would want to wait before upgrading is that Thunderbolt 3 is coming and that will seriously open up the options for boosting graphics performance and upgradability. I also would not be surprised if we see Apple start moving to ARM chips of their own design since power/watt has long been their focus and their A series chips. I doubted this until I saw some head-to-head performance comparisons between the iPad Pro and some MacBooks. |

Just wanted to know after upgrading to el capitan, did performance degrade all of a sudden, or was is a gradual decline in performance? If so why not try ccleaner / cleanmymac or a smillar app?. Check this site out too >>> http://elcapitanslow.com/
Since you've already got 4GB RAM, i would suggest you copy/backup your data to an external drive and just wipe the MacBook Pro hdd and do a clean installation of el capitan. If this doesn't help, you might have to looking for a newer machine. Why not save some money and maybe get an apple refurbished MacBook (if you're planning on sticking to MacOS). |
