More STDs Among Porn Stars Than Prostitutes

(Newser) – Who is more likely to have an STD: a Los Angeles porn star or a Nevada prostitute? According to a new study, the former, by far. A survey of 168 LA County adult film stars found 28% have gonorrhea, chlamydia, or both; the number of prostitutes infected is negligible, the Los Angeles Times reports. That's because Nevada state law requires them to use condoms, and they're tested every week for the diseases, notes the report, which comes ahead of an LA County ballot measure that would force actors to use condoms on set.

Since Nevada instituted the condom and STD testing rules, there have been no cases of HIV infection among prostitutes, adds the report, whereas the porn industry has seen several. What's more, "the report clearly shows that current testing practices miss two-thirds of active gonorrhea and chlamydia infections" among porn stars, says an expert. The porn industry counters that regular urine testing of performers makes for a safe environment, but the LAT notes that actors aren't checked for rectal or oral infections.

Background: Undiagnosed sexually transmitted infections (STIs) may be common in the adult film industry because performers frequently engage in unprotected oral and anal intercourse, STIs are often asymptomatic, and the industry relies on urine-based testing.
Methods: Between mid-May and mid-September 2010, a consecutive sample of adult film industry performers recruited from a clinic in Los Angeles, California, that provides medical care to performers was offered oropharyngeal, rectal, and urogenital testing for Gonorrhea, and rectal and urogenital testing for Chlamydia.
Results: During the 4-month study period, 168 participants were enrolled: 112 (67%) were female and 56 (33%) were male. Of the 47 (28%) who tested positive for Gonorrhea and/or Chlamydia, 11 (23%) cases had been detected through urogenital testing alone. Gonorrhea was the most common STI (42/168; 25%) and the oropharynx the most common site of infection (37/47; 79%). Thirty-five (95%) oropharyngeal and 21 (91%) rectal infections were asymptomatic. Few participants reported using condoms consistently while performing or with their personal sex partners.
Conclusions: Adult film industry performers had a high burden of STIs. Undiagnosed asymptomatic rectal and oropharyngeal STIs were common and are likely reservoirs for transmission to sexual partners inside and outside the workplace. Performers should be tested at all anatomical sites irrespective of symptoms, and condom use should be enforced to protect workers in this industry.

The title of this thread is VERY wrong. There aren't more STDs among porn stars than prostitutes. There are more STDs among porn stars in LA than prostitutes in Nevada, which is a completely different story and a very narrow view.

I just went and looked at the source article (you can do a Google search for the title), and the title of the article is, "LA Porn Stars Have More STDs Than Nevada Prostitutes". Well, of course people who are always using condoms will have fewer STDs than people who almost never use condoms. That's not a surprise at all. That's like saying, "people who use bulletproof vests get hurt less by bullets than people who don't use bulletproof vests."

If you read the post by Karmafan I think the point is that there is a hell of a lot of STDs among the adult performer demographic. Yet all we hear is how responsible the self policing is in terms of the health of said performers from industry shills like AVN and the Free Speech Coalition. This is pertinent because of Measure B, the condom initiative, which will be voted on on Tuesday in L.A.

In answer to your specific concern about the title, I can see your point. However, it also confirms that prostitutes apparently have a lot more common sense than adult performers. That revelation is most definitely not a shock.

The only reason why prostitutes insist on the use of condoms is because they could hardly request a STD test certificate from their clients. I always treat these studies with suspicion and ask myself, who has carried out the study and for what purpose.

There is a higher occurrence of STDs among porn stars in Los Angeles. We don't have any data on porn stars anywhere else.

We also don't know that prostitutes have more common sense; there is no data to support that either. All we know is that prostitutes in Nevada are required to wear condoms and have a lower number of STDs than porn stars in LA who are not required to wear condoms. Which should not be a surprise to anyone. Wearing condoms helps prevent STDs. That's basic sex ed.

All I know is if I ever get the chance to fuck a porn star I better wear 2 condoms in case 1 breaks!
