Useful program thread.

I thought I'd start a thread that would contain all the useful programs people have found during their adventures across the internet when dealing with video and file tools. Some little programs can make the world of difference if we knew they was there. So thats the purpose of this thread.

I'll start off the thread. All mine are free.

I just found this interesting little program today that will convert .flv files that we get if we download a video from the internet in to either mp4 or mkv. This is handy if you are wanting to edit the file and most video editors dont recognise the .flv format.

I used this program mainly when I had to download multiple parts of files from usenet. I would imagine it could be used today with anyone uploading multiple parts of a file.

I added this program link here in case there are any new people around that don't know about VLC media player yet. It should be a staple of any porn and video connoisseur!

Instead for VLC I use MPC-HC (mpc-hc.org)

Since the rules says the scenes not allowed to be over 75 minutes (patm and other sections), sometimes you find scenes are over 75 wich are splitted in two or more files, I can recommened you to use MP4Joiner if you want 1 single file to play

I used WinRAR for years now, but it's not free.

For splitting files (for upload), I archive and then split. For reassembly I like CheshireCat's OneClickFileJoiner (free) > http://download.cnet.com/CheshireCat...-10823089.html (sorry, the only available link is cnet).

Instead of downloading files through the browser, I prefer to use a download manager. I've been using this app since version 1 (free) > http://jdownloader.org/

For uploading the files to share, I use FileZilla (free) > http://filezilla-project.org/

I'll check out the MediaInfo and do some comparison.

I used WinRAR for years now, but it's not free.

The main negative is a little reminder window which pops up when it starts. Just press escape and it works fine. There are only a few functions that don't work properly without registering. None of which I use. It still allows adding Passwords, creating RAR and ZIP files, adding Recovery Records, testing archive functions and adding embedded Info Files by manually entering data or importing a file while creating archives.

You are correct though, it is not a bonafide free program.
I should have pointed that out.

I don't know what the limitations are with WinRAR as I have a lic. I do vaguely remember the nag screen if you were using an unregistered copy.

As with most software, it boils down to personal preference. There are numerous options for everything that I listed.

Ever had all your desktop icons get re-arranged by Windows? It often happens if you play around with screen resolution and other system changes you make to Windows.

Desktop Restore is a very handy little free app that will save your desktop layout and restore your icons to their correct position.

After installing, right clicking a free area on your desktop will pull up a context menu with three options - Save Desktop.... Restore Desktop or Custom Save/Restore, as shown below.

If you cant delete a file because some program is using it, but you dont know which, can be very annoying.
