Snow Leopard
Hi MacMen and MacLadies,
I just installed Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6), and have to say that I like it! Fist thing, is that it runs much lighter than Leopard, and following installation, it freed up over 11 gigs from my hard drive. My machine now appers to be running much faster, I have to say it was definitively worth the £25.00 price. As I discover more, I'll post my findings here. A word of advice, though: Apple has confirmed an issue that may occur when using guest accounts, but thay are working on a fix.

I think I read the bug happened only with people that upgraded? A clean install will not harm your data.

Don't have much experience with Apple. Is it best to do a clean install?

I think it is always the safest method.
I upgrade to a new version of Fedora (linux) every six months and it is always a clean install. You avoid bugs and problems from upgrading. |

You might be able to do that, which is called a "Hackintosh".
You would need to find compatible parts. I'm familiar which parts are compatible, but for a Desktop set-up... Maybe PM your Laptop model and I will try to find out for you. |

Well, I've been running Snow Leopard for 3 days now, and have a little more to report.
The good: Computer still running faster and generally more efficiently. Previewing files in finder (as opposed to the native applications) is much better, particurlarly when opening wmv files: they once opend as a stream, making it impossible to skip forward. Now they pre-load and allow you to fully navigate a scene. I had a moment of panic when I realised that with the new system came a new version of Quicktime (Quicktime X): this is not upgradeable to Pro, so I thought that I had lost the editing capabilities I had paid for. Not true: the old version is still here, and I have the choice of which version to use. For playback I use X as it is better than the original, for editing I use the previous version: the best of both worlds. When I tried to launch Photopshop (mine is CS 2), I was prompted to download the latest version of Rosetta (free): after that it works fine. The bad (so far): My version of EyeTV does not work in Snow Leopard, and since my copy is pirated, I can't avail myself of the free update. I guess I'm going to have to look for the latest version in torrents etc (BTW: if any other Mac user has the latest version and is willing to share it, PM me!). In conclusion, I still prefer this OS over Leopard 10.5. As more issues come up, I'll be posting them here. Quote:
If you have an Intel mac, running leopard, just go for the upgrade option. As for running it on a PC, I have no idea, but TimmyW's extensive expertise may well come up with the right answers.

Can't upgrade versions be used for a clean install?
I know I used to buy Vista Upgrade DVD's and perform clean-installs. There is a little loop-hole that allows you to do it. Will check if it's possible with OSX |

OK, Good. Just as I thought, the $30 (US) Snow Leopard Upgrade can be used to perform a clean install.

Reason: new link
http://macs.about.com/od/snowleopard...install_sl.htm (If Link is removed PM for a screenshot of the whole page.) Mango: Your goal of installing might just work. You might need to buy the actual DVD though. (30 US dollars, not sure where you are) None of my friends have done this except one, but on a desktop, but I found some links online that I'm reviewing to see what they did. edit: http://lifehacker.com/5345690/prep-y...r-snow-leopard |

Final Comments:
OK. It seems that yes, anything is possible, but you might be spending a whole weekend if you decide to do this. I have read this guy's story on how he installed OSX on a netbook and it seems you might be able to do it on your Laptop http://tuaw.com/2008/10/09/the-l...eopard-laptop/ (wait, one last question: You have an intel cpu right? AMD's will not work unless you hack the hell out of the kernel and about 100 binaries in the OS) I checked your laptop model though and it seems those do come with an Intel Core Duo. All I can say now is, yes it seems possible, but not an easy task. (if link gets removed PM for a screenshot of the whole page) |
