Themed matches kinda lost the plot a while ago; they were always built up to be these huge, brutal things that
shortened careers and they continue to try and build them as such but they're not anymore and it's probably because of the same reason why a lot of the
brutal matches don't feel like
brutal matches anymore, family-friendly entertainment. Grueling matches no longer feel grueling after all these years of people not being
hurt and bleeding.
When
HIAC started and for several years after it was full of moments where shit went nuts, people looked like they
got hurt, and sometimes they did. Now? Now it's just a bigger cage match and everyone seems to do it. The random match gets a HIAC match, this match gets a HIAC, that match gets HIAC.
It's as gimmicky as the KOTR has become.
Remember when King of the Ring meant something? When they'd hold tournament matches over weeks leading up to the KOTR PPV? Now KOTR is done in one night and it's some stupid thing a guy celebrates stupidly for a year. King this, King that. God I miss those days when KOTR meant something, almost as much as being a Rumble winner and Main Eventer at Mania.
