To be less dependent on physical hard drives, I use a service from Fanscity

I would suspect some underlying factor, and not the drives themselves. Especially with the problem that you noted. I've used dozens of drives over the years, and still have dozens of drives. I've had some failures, maybe half a dozen over a 30 year span, and never had a drive "autodelete" anything. That doesn't sound like a drive issue at all.

I don't handle my external drives with hard bumbs or turning them on it's side.
Every now & then you need to run the drive to keep it from not working.

Make sure too when you have it plugged in your computer & you are transfering files that it makes a complete transaction or you could have it fail on ya.

I wouldn't leave one plugged in my computer all the time.

But this is my experince for a couple of years of using these.

I have never had an "autodeletion" problem.Usually when I plug mine into the computer, it automaticlly opens a window & lets me choose what I want to do.

I agree with ButteredUp sugestions.

Personally I have found that TOSHIBA makes some of the best external harddrives,
specially the small sized 2 TB boxes the size of a cigarette pack.
I have 10 of them and a few others from diferent makers - just because I store
the entire internet on them ! LOL
In my PC I always use 4 Toshibas - I never trusted anything else.

Alot of air Humidity can cause some problems and also dust. Clean your PC
for unwanted dust at least 2 times a year for things to run smoothly and
as for portable Terabytes - NEVER drop them on the floor.
Handle them with care. I once lost an entire disc content when I dropped it
on the floor by mistake.
Try to keep them in a place without humidity or dust also.

There might be a way to recover your "lost content" from some HD´s but
you will have to contact someone in a PC store about that, or search the
web for something that can be useful. Some of your saved content you
WOULD NOT want anyone else looking at it !
- Your Privacy is rule number One !

If you think you can salvage some of it, then try that, if what you saved can
be downloaded again - then it is always available online to retrieve it once more.
It will take time, but its feasible to do.

Good luck on your mission ....

I've had probably heading towards two dozen Seagate hard drives by now, heck I have a dozen currently either in, or connected to my PC right now, and one Western Digital - unlike ButteredUp, mine are on almost permanently as they are plugged into USB hubs.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'autodelete,' the nearest thing I can think of that I've experienced to that is when the drive gets old/has had a lot of data added/removed, and starts to refuse to allow you to access parts of the data - I've had this happen twice so far, both times on the internal drives that I save all my downloads to before transferring them to other drives.

If that's what you are experiencing, then I'm sorry I don't know what the definite 'solution' is.

Some windows and Seagate repair tools can sometimes help fix the drive, at least for long enough to get the data on to another drive. Personally once this starts to happen, moving it to another drive appears to be your best option - I still have the best part of 3TB of data stuck on one drive because I didn't move it fast enough after it first played up, and almost everything I try to copy over fails to be accessible.

My personal solution has been to regularly buy new internal/external drives in the Black Friday/post Christmas sales, and transfer the data from the oldest drive to the new one.

I find it's not such an issue with my external drives, as I tend not to delete much data off them, but my internals rarely last more than 5 years, which I think a fair time period, I just label each drive with the purchase date, so I know what's what.

I just thought of something I did not mention earlier.

Would doing a defragmentation of the PC hardrives at least once a month
help out?
Some people have never done such a thing on their computers, but I
was reccomended to do it on mine.
I always do it at least 2 times every month.
Just so all files are placed in a neat order and the PC runs faster.

I have never had troubles with my hardrives and some were still working
even after 12+ years. I use my PC every day and at around 8+ hours.
Not joking and Everything is still working.
Perhas one of these days my things will just "explode" ! BOOM ! LMAO :D

I hope what we all have posted helps

chokes999 9th January 2022 05:08

A bit late to this thread but search: Seagate Tools
Free diagnostics programs to check the condition of your HD's.
Defragmenting HD's used to be a thing, but speeds have increased a lot these days, so doing it each 3 or 6 months may help. My HD is partitioned c:\programs and d:\data so I only back up my data using Karens Replicator rather than manually selecting files to back up.
