I'm no expert but this is my system. YMMV:
My HD is partitioned into c: an d: c: is for programs d: is for data Always clear computer with Ccleaner & Glary utilities before shutting down. I use a VPN located in a European country. Never use a VPN server via the US. (Check ProtonmailVPN for price/security.) 7zip files with a password. Use at least 12 character passwords to protect the zip file. I use SecureSafe Password Manager freeware to generate passwords. Passwords are listed in a spreadsheet elsewhere in your computer. I do not use Excel. Store the zipfile of sensitive data in a folder with lots of other zipfiles using an obscure name. Copy all your data files to at least 1 external HD. I use Karens Replicator (freeware) to backup files. |
If you are using Windows and you version supports Bitlocker you can encrypt your entire drive. That may or may not suit your personal needs.

I use Veracrypt...

If you are looking for a free version, your best option is TrueCrypt but unfortunately it has been discontinued and may no longer be secure. One alternative is DiskCryptor. Check out this link:
