Former CNN anchor Bobbie Battista dead at 67

Former CNN anchor Bobbie Battista has passed away at the age of 67, according to a family spokeswoman.

Battista passed away on Tuesday morning after a four year battle with cervical cancer, according to Wendy Guarisco, family spokeswoman.

"Bobbie was the consummate trooper in her struggle with cancer, she was courageous and fearless in her battle and thoughtful for all the others in her life even as she fought through the pain," Battista's husband John Brimelow said in a statement on Tuesday. "My dear partner of 25 years of marriage has cut her earthly bonds and is now in peace."

Battista was one of the original CNN Headline News anchors when the network launched in 1981. She anchored several news programs on CNN including "TalkBack Live," which aired before a studio audience in the CNN Center in Atlanta, featuring newsmakers and public participation.


***I remember her so well all these years later. The beginning of cable the beginning of CNN. I remember back in the day I watched CNN Headline news all the time; 30 minutes of the same broadcast repeated all day long.

I also remember her being parodied on SNL, for her slightly crossed eyes.

MONTREAL — Henri Richard, the speedy centre who won a record 11 Stanley Cups with the*Montreal Canadiens, died Friday after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He was 84.

The Canadiens confirmed his death on Twitter.

"The Montreal Canadiens are saddened to learn of the passing of one of the organization’s greatest legends and ambassadors, Henri Richard, this morning," the Canadiens tweeted. "Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to the Richard family."

Richard was captain of the Canadiens from 1971 to his retirement in 1975, succeeding the legendary Jean Beliveau, with whom he shares the record of playing 20 seasons for the NHL club.

He was better known as the younger brother of superstar Maurice (Rocket) Richard and was nicknamed the Pocket Rocket for his five-foot-seven, 160-pound frame.

"Richard was a great player and a great ambassador for the Montreal Canadiens organization. His passing is a great loss for all," Canadiens owner Geoff Molson tweeted.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman called Richard "one of the true giants of the game.

"The entire National Hockey League family mourns the passing of this incomparable winner, leader, gentleman and ambassador for our sport and the Montreal Canadiens," Bettman said in a statement.

Despite his small stature, Henri Richard played 1,256 regular-season games, another Canadiens record. He scored 358 goals and had 1,046 points, third in team history behind Guy Lafleur (1,246) and Beliveau (1,219).

He added 129 points in 180 playoff games.

His 11 Stanley Cups, one more than Beliveau and another former Canadiens captain Yvon Cournoyer, is unlikely ever to be surpassed. Seven were won when the NHL had only six teams.

"No one’s going to break that record, it’s impossible," Richard said. "I say that without boasting. There are too many teams now and the best players are too spread out."

He was also hockey’s most famous leap year boy, having been born on Feb. 29, 1936.

Sydow acted in nearly 200 films and television shows during his 70-year career.

Actor Max von Sydow, whose seven-decade-long career included roles as Father Merrin in "The Exorcist" and Emperor Ming in "Flash Gordon," died Sunday, his agent said. He was 90.

"It is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max Von Sydow," his wife Catherine said in a statement sent to NBC News by agent Jean Diamond.

Von Sydow was born Carl Adolf von Sydow in Sweden in 1929 and started acting in European films at about the age of 20. Since then, he had appeared in nearly 200 movies and television shows.

Recently, Sydow played Three-Eyed Raven in "Game of Thrones," Lor San Tekka in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and voiced Klaus Ziegler for "The Simpsons."

His appearance in "Game of Thrones" earned him an Emmy nomination. He has also been nominated for two Academy Awards — for best actor in the late 1980s for his portrayal of a penniless farmer in "Pelle the Conqueror" and for best supporting actor in 2012 for his role as a mute in “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.”

Sydow became an icon of global cinema in the 1950s and 1960s with his roles in famed Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman’s brooding existential dramas, such as “The Seventh Seal.” The actor was a regular in the director's films, acting in nearly a dozen.

He debuted in Hollywood as Jesus in 1965's "The Greatest Story Ever Told," but became well-known after his role as the priest in "The Exorcist."

He was also known for roles in more recent films "Shutter Island" and "Minority Report."

Rosalind Walter who was the inspiration for "Rosie the Riveter" died March 4th at age 95.

Max appeared in more movies than the Twin Towers. (more or less)
Sad loss. It's shocking to think he was 44 or so when he played Father Merrin.

Only difference is he didn't crash and burn but stood proud to the end. ;)

He will live on through his work for decades if not centuries. That's the great thing about films, actors live on for future generations to enjoy...

Here is a man who left us in January with little fanfare but his work was important to millions...

Christopher Tolkien, the son and literary executor of The Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien, died Jan. 15 at age 95. Just as the elder Tolkien spent his life creating the mythology and characters of Middle-earth, Christopher spent his own life cataloguing and explicating his father's unfinished work. It was thanks to his efforts that The Silmarillion was finally published in 1977, giving a narrative account of Middle-earth's history up until the beginning of The Lord of the Rings. Many other volumes followed later, including Beren and Lúthien and The Fall of Gondolin.
