Hello suzybros, is there a way to make the website dark?

There is no native support for a dark theme. You could try your luck with a browser extension that does that in a generic way, but because it's generic and not native, it might not work as well or even break things.

I use an extension called Dark Reader. It works for Chrome and Firefox. However, like DarkRaven671 said, it's not native, so a few things don't look great or are totally obscured. Also, in general, the more extensions (or add-ons) you have on your browser, the slower it will be. And then you have to be careful about what you add, because some (or most) of these bastards are just data collection tools in disguise, for unscrupulous companies. They are like vampires, you have to invite them in.

I remember, once upon a time, we had a 'dark mode,' but for reasons I can't recall it went away/was switched off.

Pretty sure there was a drop-down box at one point, years ago, on the lower-left corner of the main page.

Now, at center bottom is an option for "mobile skin", which is a simple GUI, mainly meant for mobile devices. But there is no color-changing option.

Just added the Dark Reader extension (for Chrome), and it does make the main section (posts & threads) dark (black and some blue and purple), but not the sides or the forum header, so you'd have to use the zoom function in your browser to make it fully dark.

It can be turned on for individual sites (default is on for all), and there are adjustable options for font, brightness, contrast, sepia and grayscale.

Will play around with it tonight to see if it breaks anything...

If you don't like header, just block those files since they are images instead of code.
It's not as pretty, but it is a tiny bit faster and leaves everything dark.
